Antibiotics and Blood Donation: The 3-Day Rule
Antibiotics work by fighting bacterial infections in your body. If you are taking them, it likely means you have an active infection, which makes your blood unsafe for a recipient who might be immunocompromised.
The Guidelines
You strictly cannot donate blood while taking a course of antibiotics. Furthermore, you must wait for a "washout" period after your last dose.
How Long to Wait?
- Oral Antibiotics: Wait 72 hours (3 days) after your last pill.
- Injectable Antibiotics: Often require a 14-day wait period depending on the severity of the infection.
- Symptom Check: Even if the timeline is passed, you must be completely symptom-free. No fever, no cough, no redness.
This rule ensures that no residual infection or medication is passed to the patient receiving your blood.
