Coffee and Donation: The Caffeine Rule
For many of us, the day doesn't start without coffee. But on donation day, you might want to delay that second cup.
Before Donation
Limit It. Caffeine is a diuretic (makes you pee), which leads to fluid loss. Since donation also removes fluid, starting dehydrated increases your risk of feeling dizzy or finding the vein hard to stick.
After Donation
Wait 2 Hours. Do not drink hot coffee immediately. Hot liquids can dilate blood vessels, potentially causing lightheadedness. Also, caffeine blocks iron absorption from your post-donation meal.
Best Strategy: Drink 500ml of water *before* your coffee on donation morning.
