Menstruation and Blood Donation: Myths vs Facts
Ladies, there is a lot of misinformation out there. Let's clear it up: Menstruation serves as NO barrier to blood donation. You can absolutely donate blood while on your period, provided you feel comfortable.
The Only Condition: Hemoglobin
During menstruation, women lose a small amount of blood (approx 30-80ml). Donating blood removes another ~350ml:
- The Check: The only critical factor is your Hemoglobin level. It must be above 12.5 g/dL.
- Iron Levels: If your heavy flow leaves you slightly anemic temporarily, you might be deferred to protect YOUR health, not the recipient's.
Comfort is Key
If you experience painful cramps, heavy flow, or general weakness during your cycle, it is best to wait a week. Listen to your body. If you feel energetic and meet the Hb criteria, go ahead and be a hero!
