Fact Check: Does Donating Blood Help Weight Loss?

You might have heard that donating blood burns calories. Is it true? Yes. Is it a weight loss strategy? No.

The Numbers

Researchers estimate that the body burns roughly 600 to 650 calories to replace the pint (450ml) of blood you donate. This energy is used to synthesize new proteins, red blood cells, and other components.

Why It Doesn't Count as "Dieting"

  • One-Time Event: You can only donate once every 3 months. Burning 650 calories once a quarter is negligible for long-term weight loss.
  • Recovery Eating: You are advised to eat a hearty meal and drink fluids after donating. A cookie and juice alone might add back 300 calories instantly!

Verdict: Donate for the good karma, not for the waistline.
