In 2022, UK scientists successfully transfused lab-grown red blood cells into human volunteers. These cells were grown from stem cells. They lasted longer in the body than donated blood!

The Catch

Cost & Scale. It costs thousands of dollars to grow just a few teaspoons of blood. It is currently only viable for extremely rare blood types (like Bombay Group or Rh Null) where no human donor exists.
