Hair Loss Meds (Finasteride/Minoxidil)

Hair Loss Meds: Finasteride & Dutasteride

Protecting your hairline shouldn't endanger a baby. Like acne meds, these drugs (Propecia/Avodart) are teratogenic.

The Risk

They affect male hormones (androgens). If a pregnant woman receives blood containing Finasteride, it can cause defects in a male fetus's reproductive organs.

Timeline

  • Finasteride: Wait 1 month after last dose.
  • Dutasteride: Wait 6 months (it stays in the body longer).

Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine) is generally considered safe, but always declare it.
