Hemoglobin 12.5: The Biggest Barrier to Donation
Hemoglobin (Hb) testing is the most common step where potential donors get deferred. In India, the prevalence of nutritional anemia makes this a major challenge.
The Magic Number: 12.5 g/dL
Regardless of gender, you need an Hb level of 12.5 g/dL or higher to donate. This ensures:
- You have enough iron stores to recover from the donation without becoming anemic yourself.
- The unit of blood provided offers sufficient oxygen-carrying capacity to the patient (who is likely already anemic or bleeding).
How to Improve Your Hb?
If you were deferred for low Hb, don't lose heart!
- Eat Spinach, Beetroot, Jaggery, and Red Meat.
- Combine these with Vitamin C (Lemon/Orange) to boost absorption.
- Try again in 2-4 weeks!
