Should I Take Iron Supplements Before Donating?
If you've been deferred for low hemoglobin, you might be tempted to pop an iron pill. Is it a good idea?
The Medical Advice
Yes, but with caution. Taking a low-dose iron supplement (like Ferrous Sulphate) after donation is often recommended to replace iron stores.
Before Donation?
It takes weeks for oral iron to convert into hemoglobin. Popping a pill the night before won't change your test results tomorrow. Stick to natural food sources for 2-4 weeks prior.
Warning: Iron supplements can cause stomach upset or constipation. Drink plenty of water and fiber if you take them.
