Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: When to Resume Donation

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: When to Resume Donation

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Blood Donation

Motherhood demands a lot from the body. During pregnancy and lactation, your nutritional reserves are prioritized for the baby, making blood donation unsafe for the mother.

The Rules

  • During Pregnancy: Absolute Deferral. Donating could compromise fetal oxygen supply.
  • After Delivery: You must wait 12 months after childbirth. This gives your body time to replenish iron stores lost during birth.
  • Breastfeeding: While breastfeeding, you are transferring nutrients to the infant. It is recommended to wait until the baby is significantly weaned (or at least 12 months postpartum) to prevent maternal fatigue and anemia.

Miscarriage

In the unfortunate event of a miscarriage or abortion, a waiting period of 6 months is usually mandated to ensure physical recovery.
