The O Negative Superpower: Why You Are Essential
If your blood type is O Negative (O-), you are a member of an elite group. You are a "Universal Donor" for red blood cells. But what does that mean?
The Science of Antigens
Blood types are defined by antigens on the surface of Red Blood Cells (RBCs):
- Group A has A antigens.
- Group B has B antigens.
- Group AB has both.
- Group O has NONE.
Additionally, the Rh factor (Positive/Negative) determines if you have the D antigen. O Negative people lack A, B, and Rh antigens entirely.
Why It Matters
Because O- blood has no antigens to trigger an immune reaction, it can be transfused into ANY patient (A+, B-, AB+, etc.) safely.
The Golden Hour: In severe trauma cases where there is no time to test the patient's blood type, doctors immediately use O Negative blood to save lives. Your blood is the default life-saver in every emergency room.
