Vegans & Vegetarians: The Iron Challenge
A common myth is that vegetarians cannot donate blood because of low iron. The truth? You can be a superstar donor, but you need to be smarter with your diet.
Heme vs. Non-Heme Iron
- Heme Iron (Meat): Absorbed easily (~25%).
- Non-Heme Iron (Plants): Found in spinach, lentils, beans. Absorption is lower (~5-10%).
The Vitamin C Hack
To boost absorption of plant-based iron, you MUST pair it with Vitamin C. This converts the iron into a more absorbable form.
- Good Combo: Dal + Lemon Juice.
- Good Combo: Spinach Salad + Orange/Bell Peppers.
- Avoid: Drinking tea/coffee immediately with meals (tannins block iron).
Eat right, and your hemoglobin will stay high enough to save lives regularly!
