What to Eat Before Donating Blood: A Donor's Diet Guide

Fainting or feeling dizzy during donation is usually preventable. 90% of reactions happen because the donor is either dehydrated or donated on an empty stomach. Setup yourself for success with these tips.

3 Hours Before Appointment

Do NOT Fast. Eat a solid, low-fat meal. Fatty foods (like fries or cheese) can affect the clarity of your plasma, sometimes making it unusable for testing.

Best Foods

  • Iron-Rich: Spinach, Eggs, Beans, Pomegranate.
  • Complex Carbs: Oats, Whole wheat bread, Rice (provides sustained energy).
  • Hydration: Drink 500ml of water right before you sit in the chair. This boosts blood pressure and vein volume.

What to Avoid

Avoid Alcohol (24 hours) and very greasy foods. Also, avoid excessive caffeine immediately before, as it dehydrates you.
