Whole Blood vs. Platelet Donation: Understanding the Difference

When you walk into a blood bank, you often have two choices: donating Whole Blood or donating Single Donor Platelets (SDP) via Apheresis. Both save lives, but they are very different processes.

1. Whole Blood Donation

This is the standard donation type.

  • Time Taken: 10-15 minutes on the chair.
  • What is Taken: 350-450ml of your blood, containing RBCs, White Cells, and Platelets.
  • Frequency: Once every 3 months (men) or 4 months (women).
  • Use Case: Emergency trauma, surgeries, anemia.

2. Platelet Donation (Apheresis)

This is a more specialized process using a machine.

  • Time Taken: 60 to 90 minutes.
  • What is Taken: The machine draws blood, spins it to extract ONLY platelets, and returns the Red Blood Cells and Plasma back to your body.
  • Frequency: You can donate every 15 days! (Up to 24 times a year).
  • Use Case: Dengue patients, Cancer patients undergoing chemo, and Organ transplants.

If you have good veins and a high platelet count (>1.5 lakh), consider becoming an SDP donor. It is a powerful way to save cancer patients.
